Nearly every pony party over the last several years has been a unicorn themed party. I feel very grateful to have many BEAUTIFUL ponies available to make these little girl’s fairytail dreams come true – to see, pat and ride a unicorn, sharing this experience with their friends and family on a birthday celebration is so memorable for everyone.

After 20+ years of entertaining at kids parties and most of those being pony parties, I can certainly vouch for these as being lasting, life long, happy memories as there have been so many times that people have come up to me telling of their memories years ago of

Mrs Balloonatic and her ponies attending their party or their older child’s party. I’ve even been shown printed family photo albums, “see, that’s you Mrs Balloonatic, you came to our party, we still remember this party”. What a blessing to know how much joy this job brings to others.

Unicorns pony parties are soooo popular with little girls … and let’s admit it, they are as equally popular with us mums too, who doesn’t love unicorns after all?

To have stunning white unicorn, with all the trims – flower garland around the unicorn’s proudly curved neck, a flower halo around it’s ears and horn, a beautiful saddle and saddle blanket fit for a majestic unicorn from a royal stable … your pretty little fairy princess aboard the unicorn’s graceful back, all picture perfect.

So naturally here at Balloonaversal we do get lots of requests for a white unicorn to attend parties, which we are happy to say we can do for the Gold and Premium packages, but I do feel sad for our other remarkable unicorns.

Did you know this little known fact that unicorns come in other shades of white? And that these colours are quite rare among unicorns, but are just as stunning … if not more so. Well, I discovered that this is true and how special it is.

A Royal Stable of Rare Unicorn Colours

It’s even more special to know that being in the kid’s party and entertainment industry as long as I have, you do get to meet lots of amazing and unique people. For example, a few years ago, I was attending a fairy convention and was privileged to meet the queen of the Forest Fairies and, of course, as many people know fairies are very fond of unicorns and many beautiful unicorns live in Faiyland. Well, the Queen of the Forest Fairies is no exception and she has a stable full of some of the rarest unicorns that ever lived and this is how I found out about the 6 shades of white unicorns.

Amazingly, Her Royal Majesty, Queen of the Forest Fairies has each of these shades of white unicorns in her royal stable, and what’s even more amazing is how kind and generous the Queen is. In one of our conversations a year or two after I met the Queen (as she got to know my business of bringing joy to children with pony rides and pony visits

for birthday celebrations), she very generously made the offer that if there are children that would like to have a unicorn attend their party, then she would LOVE to help bring joy and happiness too by making available to me, her rare and beautiful unicorns. You can imagine, I was absolutely speechless and so humbled by her incredible offer. In the past I just dressed up ponies to look like unicorns, but now I am able to bring REAL LIVE unicorns to children’s birthday parties.

So thus began my remarkable business arrangement with Her Royal Majesty, Queen of the Forest Fairies.

Unicorn Health Alert

But it wasn’t long before we ran into some health problems for the unicorns. You see the weather in Fairyland is pleasant and warm all year round, not like here in Melbourne where we need to wear sunscreen and cover our skin in summer, or put on a coat to keep warm in winter.

We soon discovered that the unicorns were suffering in Melbourne’s summer and also in winter. The first indication that something was wrong was that their horns began drooping and even fading away!!! With some help from the Fairy Unicorn Vet, we learned that the unicorn’s horns simply needed protection from the elements – strong sun or cold winds. I knew just what to do. I would get out my sewing machine and with a selection of beautiful coloured fabrics, I created custom unicorn covers to slip over their horns. I even decorated them with ribbons and flowers and beads to match the beautiful flower garlands that the unicorns wear.

And even more precious is the fact that the Queen of the Forest Fairies has personally sent a very special and extremely rare unicorn to the party!! How amazing is that?

So that was something new I learned about unicorns and when children tell me that these aren’t real unicorns because the horns don’t look real, well, its no wonder they say this. They certainly don’t look real if they have a gold, silver or even pink fabric custom made unicorn cover, with ribbons and silk flowers stuck to them do they?

But I must say, the children are so thrilled when they learn what I have to tell them about unicorn horns and that the unicorn in their midst is in fact a REAL unicorn.

So as much as we like to accept special requests for white unicorns, we will do our best to provide you with one, but please realise you will definitely feel very privileged to have any one of our other shade of white majestic unicorns bring joy and happiness to your child’s birthday party, offering life long cherished memories.

Pet Therapy

Pet Therapy is a growing need in our community. How many of us grew up with a pet of some kind or collected pets as adults for our own company or for our children’s? Do you have special memories of favourite pets? Moments you shared together? I know I do. I have many times where I could swear my horse or my cat knew that I was sad and emotional and just knowing that they somehow understood made such a difference to my mental health.

As people move on in age and move into nursing homes, in most cases they can’t take their beloved pets with them. So much in their life changes at that point, even the simple thing like taking care of a pet, getting your mind of your self and your own woes to look after someone/thing else – can’t be done anymore. It’s hard and very sad as an animal lover to think that one day I may not be able – not allowed to have my cat sleeping on my bed anymore.

The Joy Pet Therapy Brings

Having pets visit nursing homes brings incredible joy to many many residents, perhaps more than we often realise. A dog, a cat, bird or other smaller animals bring those bright smiles and so does a cute miniature pony.

It was years ago when I got my first miniature pony. Jeremiah and I met when he was just 5 months old, a beautiful chocolate brown colt with a white star. I began training him not long after he was weened and on his 1st birthday he got his first gig at a primary school fete roaming around with me (Mrs Balloonatic) meeting and greeting people. He was amazingly calm for his age and was a real hit.

Pet Therapy Pony Jeremiah

Jeremiah is 20 years old as I write this article (we’re planning his 21st birthday bash for 2020). He has had enormous experience with kids and parties always so calm and so giving in his nature (as is common with miniature ponies).

But I would have to say that he and his younger ‘co-workers’ do such an outstanding job when they visit with the elderly at nursing homes. Our miniature therapy ponies bring so much joy and I feel so blessed and privileged to bring my little pets out for others to enjoy. From the specialist dementia wings to aging resident, our therapy ponies can visit all with amazing results – conversation with the pony and one another, singing to the pony, walking with the pony even leading the pony and of course the bright happy smiles and at times tears of joy.

Pony Rides Every Weekend

2024 PONY RIDE UPDATE – Service No Longer Available

Although we thoroughly enjoyed our time at Edendale Farm the during 2016 and 2017 seasons, sadly we were no longer able to continue to offer pony rides and face painting. We are still involved in many Nillumbik events (as we have since 2002) and you will usually see us at the Nillumbik Pet Expo Diamond Creek in October and also at the Hurstbridge Wattle Festival in August with one of the local Kindagartens for free hand led pony rides for the kids.

If you’re interested in the occasional pony ride, do check our ‘Specials’ tab as we often place the dates of other public events that we are attending with the ponies. We also offer School Holiday Pony Riding Activities from our property in Doreen for kids between the ages of 3 – 11. Great News for any parent of pony mad kids! Not ready to jump in and buy your totally horse smitten child a pony yet? Having a Balloonaversal pony party once a year isn’t fulfilling a horsy fix often enough for the addicted one? Then we may have a solution.

The Balloonaversal ponies and team will be at the Edendale Community Environment Farm every Saturday from 10am – 3pm (weather permitting). Kids can also get their face painted by a Balloonaversal team member too.

Visit A Farm With The Kids

Edendale is a great place to take the kids out to and there’s always plenty to see and do. Baby goats were born this September and are such a joy to watch their antics, pat the resident guinea pigs, visit the chooks and sheep or try your hand at milking a cow – it’s a pretend cow, but the kids love this activity. The farm’s opening hours are 9am – 4pm and is situated at Gastons Rd, Eltham.

Visit the native plant nursery and bring some new plants home to fill that bare patch in your garden, or buy some vegetable seedlings and grow your own veggies.

Lovely Farm Cafe – Breakfast, Lunch and Afternoon Tea

Eden Cafe with its pretty outdoor setting is a great place to sit, relax and enjoy a bite to eat and a cup of coffee. And for all us tea connoisseurs – tea is served in fine bone china teapots with fine bone china tea cups and saucers to compliment.

Kids Parties At The Farm – A Great Choice

Children’s parties can be booked in one of the two gazebos. There’s plenty of space to run and play and the kids and parents will love a guided farm tour, so make sure you book that in. Contact Edendale on 9439 3711 or visit here for prices and packages.

Balloonaversal Pony Rides On Saturdays

UPDATE. Pony Rides and Face Painting are no longer available on Saturdays. You can still book pony rides to attend your Edendale Farm party though.

Pony rides are $5 for 1 ride around the paddock or 3 times around the paddock for $10. For parties booked at Edendale on Saturdays, you can line up with the general public for pony rides or pre-book your own pony for a 45 min session which is $130 and can be booked by calling Balloonaversal on 8669 1303.

Music And Your Child’s Development

As the mother of a two year old, I am always looking for activities that encourage learning and development. I find that most of the activities we do together that result in learning are purely by coincidence and luck and not by any skill or training I have.

As of late, my son has shown a real passion for music. He has even begun to differentiate between styles of music he likes and dislikes and his preferences seem to be Contemporary Christian music and Country (Keith Urban). Of course both of those fall behind any song produced by The Wiggles! But I digress. The point is, he is drawn to music and feels the need to express himself in many ways when he hears it.

Music Helps To Develop Many Life Skills

For example, he has learned different dance moves from the television characters on his favourite programs, as well as from good old mum and dad. He recreates those moves into his own little dance routine whenever he hears a song he likes, even in the car. He is using his creativity and memory to express himself, which I believe is helping build his character. It’s so cute when he tries to sing as well, more like hum. But this is another form of expression and he’s increasing his vocabulary by wanting to say the right words. He claps to the music and tries his best to keep a rhythm. These are all amazing skills that he is learning and using in his own individual way. I’ve found this is such a breakthrough age where children begin to graduate from simply imitating to combining what they know in ways to interact with the world around them.

These activities are encouraging many facets of development: physical (clapping, stomping, other dance motions) social (a way for him to interact with those around him) cognitive (he is bridging pathways from what he’s learned to how he wants to use the information to express his own personality); emotional (a definite sense of pride accompanies all forms of learning in children).

Look For Opportunities To Play Music

If your child enjoys music, you can encourage them by making music readily available for them without having to spend a fortune. I would guess they already have toys that make music. A lot of books play music as well. Even just turning on the radio throughout the day and finding a station that is suitable for you both can be a very rewarding experience. Whether your child is hearing music on the television, radio, or directly from an instrument you are playing, he/she has so many opportunities for learning. Capture those moments and make the most of them, they all go towards creating wonderful memory vaults not only for your children but for yourself as well.

Team Profile – Gemma Tapping

Gemma is a high school student and has been with our company for 3 years. What kind of work does Gemma do you say being so young?

Gemma is one of our ‘Pony Assistants’ and has a very important job here at Balloonaversal Head Quarters.

Her main role is to lead kids on the ponies at children’s birthday parties or corporate/community events on the weekends. Her wonderful gentle spirit makes her a perfect candidate for creating a fun, memorable experience for the children as they ride. She chats to the kids, asks them all kinds of questions as she leads them on the pony, and always has a laugh with them.

Can’t Get Enough Of The Ponies

We also see Gemma during the week as well, you see Gemma is one of a small group lucky young ladies who have the privilege of being able to come and ride our larger ponies and Thoroughbred horse whenever they want. All in return for helping with the work load of taking care of the 14 ponies that we have here at home. It’s pretty hard for a bunch of horse mad girls wouldn’t you think? They get plenty of privileges – riding and jumping lessons when I can are just one example.

I often joke about our place being the local Saddle Club chapter as the girls often meet up and go out for adventurous rides together – the Diamond Creek McDonalds Drive Through being a popular destination for teenage girls. Swimming the ponies in our dam during summer time or twilight rides on a full moon are some of the other fun experiences they have.

Why Buy A Horse? I’ve Got Plenty!

It works great for our family and the teen’s parents as the cost of owning a horse of your own plus all the equipment and up keep is quite expensive.

With all this time spent around the ponies, Gemma has become a very experienced young horsewoman. She has even trained Josh our 16 hand Thoroughbred tricks.

Gemma has a goal to become an equine vet and works very hard toward this. I’m quietly confident that she will achieve this ambition.

Remember to say hi to Gemma and ask her why she was wearing a green Band-Aid on her head recently. (Or keep an eye out for next months issue of BalloonaScoop, I may just tell you the answer).

This Year’s Pony Party Winner – How Much Fun Did They Have?

On the 31^st March this year, we draw the winning name out of our big red box for the Win A Pony Party Competition. Catching that moment on film and the subsequent phone call to Alisha Ford was a lot of fun, but not as much fun as the party for little Jade.

Jade celebrated her 6^th birthday on Sunday the 22^nd of May in fine style choosing the theme My Little Pony. Our arrival was greatly anticipated with kids squealing in delight ‘The Ponies are here, the ponies are here!” Such excitement.

Beautiful Calm Ponies, Perfect For Kids Parties

Our beautiful ponies Annabel and Jeremiah were a huge hit and as always were so calm and gentle amongst the noise and activity of 14 excited six year olds.

Annabel, a pretty chestnut Shetland Pony mare dressed as Pinkey Pie from My Little Pony gave lots and lots of rides. Her even temperament and sweet nature coaxed a couple of shy boys into having a ride too (and then more rides). Meanwhile Jeremiah the chocolate brown (but grey because of his clipped winter coat) Miniature Pony enjoyed being groomed, mane braded in to several plaits and then being clothed in the fashionable pony dress ups from the dress up box. The kids even took turns leading Jeremiah around the garden, which he didn’t mind in the least as there were plenty of opportunities to stop and pick at the lush green grass – his favourite past time.

Balloon Party Hats Add So Much Fun

The last 20 minutes of the 1:5 hour party was spent playing a balloon game. Everyone gathered around Mrs Balloonatic as she performed balloon twisting magic creating amazing balloon party hats for each child.

Last but not least was a big happy group shot of all the kids with Mrs Balloonatic, Jeremiah and Annabel. It’s fair to say that everyone had a ball and we achieved our number one goal is to help families create memorable family moments.

Family Is Important

You see at Balloonaversal we firmly believe in family. In a time when so many of us parents are struggling for meaningful time with our kids and loved ones, we believe that there has never been a more important time than now to ensure we create those strong family ties … and those treasured family memories.

Children’s birthday parties are a perfect opportunity to do this and we’ve got to tell you, we find it truly wonderful witnessing the joy a great party brings … we simply love this aspect of our business.

Uniting AgeWell Staff Member Shares Their Recent Experience In This Candid Interview

At one of our more recent outings to Uniting AgeWell in Wyndham Vale, Gemma Tapping interviewed one of the staff members about the profound health benefits of animals … particularly ponies visiting the elderly. Here’s Angela Shegog’s view of animals for therapy and Jeremiah the mini pony’s interaction with their residents.

Gemma: Is this the first time you’ve had animal assisted therapy?
Angela: No it is not, we have had other animals come out before.

Gemma: What other animals have you had come out before?
Angela: Animals we have had here before is a dog, circus poodles, we had a chicken coop, reptiles, crocodiles, snakes, and cats.

Gemma: How long ago was it?
Angela: The dog came last week, the circus poodles came a year ago, the chicken coop was here a year and a half ago, the reptiles, crocodiles and snakes came here a year ago, and the cats were here a year ago.

Gemma: How often?
Angela: The dog comes every week, the circus poodles only came once, the reptiles, crocodile and snakes came once, and the cats used to belong to one of the residents so they were here every day.

Gemma: Do you have a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly program of activities?
Angela: Every week we have activities such as music concerts, an art teacher comes out and helps them to paint, we have create crafts sessions, we have reminiscence sessions, a session where the residents can learn how to make object out of leather such as wallets, we have bingo, a movie cinema, we have trivia, quiz games, they can see the current news every day, we also have dance therapy, a walking group and active games such as playing with balls and rackets.

Gemma: What other kinds of activities or incursions do you have on a regular basis?
Angela: Once a month we have high tea with different cakes and slices, and we have volunteers who come out and talk and interact with the resident one on one.

Gemma: What sort of positive benefits do you expect to see from having Jeremiah here today?
Angela: I would hope to see Jeremiah make the residents happy, and see the satisfaction on their faces, he cheered them up.

Gemma: How do you think Jeremiah made people happy today?
Angela: I think him interacting and bringing everyone together, I think it made people happy because it was something new and exciting. The affection he provided them and that he was friendly and cuddly.

Gemma: Were there any surprising questions or interactions by the residents today?
Angela: When the residents gave Jeremiah a cup of coffee.

Gemma: How did you hear about Angels with Hooves?
Angela: My co-worker, Angela Taylor, received a brochure about a year ago and when we got enough money to get you guys out here she organised it.

Gemma: Would you happily recommend Angels with Hooves?
Angela: Yes I would definitely, because it is a perfect organisation for the elderly as well as kids, and it is something different and new for everyone.

Gemma: What has been your favourite moment with the pony and residents so far?
Angela: My favourite moment was the whole time he was here, and the residents reacting with the pony.

Gemma: Why do you say that?
Angela: Jeremiah gave the residents something to look forward to and get excited about, it was great to see the surprise on their faces when they saw the pony for the first time.

Gemma: Why is that important?
Angela: It is important for the residents to look forward to the pony because it gives them something to get excited about and so they are kept happy and content which really is the main aim.

Gemma: Angela, thank you so much for being willing to be interviewed today, I’m glad Jeremiah has brought joy to your residents today.
Angela: My pleasure.

Nathan Excited to see his pic in the Herald Sun

Nathan Green, 22, is bright young man with a bright future. When he’s not balloon twisting for Balloonaversal, he’s working as a teacher’s aid at a local special school. Nathan has had a passion to help young people with special needs since his family took on a special needs foster child 14 years ago.

Jack (pseudo name) quickly became a part of the family and stayed with them for 5 years until he succumb to his illness sadly passing away. This experience left an indelible impression on Nathan and his two older brothers. Still living with his parents and middle brother, they still take in and look after foster children providing them with a loving environment.

As Nathan is one of our talented advanced balloon twisters, being naturally artistic and possessing a flair for performing, he is a popular choice when it comes to kids parties and event entertainment. Always smiling, always positive this well spoken young man brings cheer and fun where ever he goes. It’s an absolute pleasure to introduce him to you and to have him as a part of our team.
